Strong aftershock to upset New Zealand after a 7.5 earthquake on the Richter scale, killing two people.
South Island has seen hundreds of aftershocks, including a quake of 6.3 on the Richter scale,
after the initial one hit after midnight on Monday.
The epicenter was north-east of Christchurch, near the town of Kaikoura, which were cut off by landslides.
Big river dammed up by a landslide also burst their banks, sending “a big wall of water” downstream.
It is being urged to move immediately to higher ground – population about Clarence River – one of the largest in the South Island.
Aftershocks have left some communities without electricity and water, although the authorities began to slowly regain its supplies.
GeoNet, a project funded by the government and said that the earthquake seismology first actually two tremors related, that would aftershocks continue over the next few months.
