German twins’ hand-hold divides nation
Betrayal or the celebration of sporting ideals? German twins crossed the finish line in Rio smiling and holding hands, and has divided the nation and homeland.
Anna Lisa Hahner came 81st and 82 nd in the women’s marathon on Sunday.
They were accused of minimizing the games by a senior official in the German athletics, but there was some sympathy for them on social media.
Women themselves admit any kind of publicity is welcome, because they do not receive any government funding.
Hahners defended its performance in the function of Facebook (in German) on Monday, saying it had done its best.
“Definitely not what we had hoped for …. However, one of the greatest sports moments we have. That’s why we trained on our borders and sometimes beyond.”
However, its performance was more than 21 minutes behind the winning time of 15 minutes short of Personal Best.
In an email to The New York Times, Anna insisted they crossed the finish line together by accident, describing it as a “magic moment”.
I’ve defended them with self-promotion, saying it received “zero funding euros” from the German sports association.
