The ministers approved the decision at a meeting of the Ministerial Committee on Tuesday,
with the construction of a third runway at Heathrow, rather than an extension, believed to be preferred.
However, Downing Street has not been officially confirmed this decision.
Transport Minister Chris Grayling will make a statement before the House of Commons about 01:00 on Tuesday.
But the decision facing a lengthy consultation before it becomes final.
The way that will be implemented to expand outside, a new runway for planes,
or as an extension to the existence of one, were not disclosed.
Last year’s study,
by Sir Howard Davies has recommended a third runway at Heathrow but other options included a new runway for aircraft in Gatwick Airport or extend one existing runways at Heathrow Airport.
