Philippine Senator and former presidential candidate Miriam Defensor Santiago aged 71 has died.
Former judge of lung cancer, died on Thursday morning and “died peacefully” in a hospital in the capital, Manila, her husband said.
Ms. Santiago ran for president in the May elections, but he eventually lost to Rodrigo Duterte.
Plagued by ill-health campaign in the elections, but insisted that it was suitable for the office.

Born in the city of Iloilo, Ms. Santiago announced to supporters in 2014 that she was suffering from Stage IV lung cancer.
She refused a judicial position in the International Criminal Court because of her illness.
