Udta Punjab currently eighth highest revenue Bollywood film of the year.
But a month ago, the film makers worry if they will release ever,
because of censorship issues. BBC Asian Network of Harun al-Rashid speaks to the actors and writers on creative freedom and control in India’s Bollywood.
The Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC) asked the Punjab Udta film makers to make 94 cuts, including the removal of expletives,
references to cities in Punjab and any shots of the drug consumed, ironically in a film about drug abuse.
But Anurag Kashyup and other producers decided to defy an order CBFC in Mumbai court,
which ultimately allow the screening of the film with only one cut – a snapshot of the character actor Shahid Kapoor lead peeing in a crowd.
“I must admit that I realized that it would not be easy to get [the film] there,
but I did not expect the amount of conflict we will have to go through,” he said Kapoor told the BBC.
But he added that “the controversy helped the film”
because a lot of Indians are using social media to show their support for freedom of creativity in India.
“The film got leaked two days before the deadline for his release before, but we still have people go to the theater, which is amazing,” he said.
