Mariam Mukhtar born on January 1,1992 was a Pakistani Fighter Pilot. Pakistan’s first female fighter pilot to die in the line of duty. She was the daughter of Col.R.Mukhtiar Ahmed Sheikh. She spent her early life in Karachi. She chose to join the armed forces,despite having previously pursued civil engineering from NED,Karachi. She joined Pakistan Air Force as an aviation cadet in the 132nd GD Pilot course in 2007 with seven other female cadets who underwent training with her an graduated as pilot officers. On 6 May 2011,she formally acquired commission in the Pakistan Air Force as Flying Officer.
On 24 November 2015, Mariam Mukhtar Sheikh and her co-pilot were on their routine operational training mission in PAF F-7PG aircraft. A critical malfunction affected the aircraft and in order to save the lives of the civilians both the pilots risked their own lives and ejected when the area was civilian free. Crash took place in Kundian,Mianwali District,about 175 kilometers southwest of Islamabad. Mariam Mukhtar lost her life during the ejection process, were as her co-pilot survived sustaining minor injuries.
Mariams body reached Karachi’s Faisal Air Base in C-130 for burial
“She was indeed a role model for women and pride of Pakistan” were the words said by General Raheel Shareef.
